Livingston, IL

Livingston is a Madison County village where the 2020 census counted 763 residents, down from 858 in 2010. Its beginning came from the railroad and a nearby coal mine: the heirs of John Livingston laid out the town around 1904, and the village incorporated in 1905. That origin gives Livingston an industrial starting point, even though the present-day map is built around homes, local roads, and school routes.

The village sits in northeastern Madison County, with Williamson directly to the north and Interstate 55 cutting through the southeast corner at Exit 37. Livingston belongs to Staunton Community Unit School District 6, linking local families to schools in the larger Staunton area. The old mine and depot are gone from daily use, but both still sit close to the village's original story. The Kaskaskia River and the old coal-country landscape add broader geographic context, while the interstate keeps the village connected to the St. Louis–Illinois corridor. Livingston is a small place whose name still carries the railroad, mine, and family land story that started it.
