Livingston, LA

Livingston is the kind of parish seat where courthouse business and the scientific world happen within the same local orbit. The town, with 1,877 residents in the 2020 census, sits in Livingston Parish and grew around timber, rail lines, and crossings over the Amite River. The Lyons Cypress Lumber Company cleared cypress north of its mill, and the railroad helped shift nearby Doyle toward the present town. The parish itself is named for Edward Livingston, a former U.S. secretary of state, so even the place-name has a little political history tucked inside it.

Then there is LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory installation north of town. Its long, ruler-straight arms look almost surreal against the pine and pasture landscape, and the Livingston site works with a second detector in Hanford, Washington, to catch tiny ripples from violent events in space. Around town, daily life is still parish offices, Livingston Parish Public Schools, roads, churches, and the fairgrounds.
