Llano Grande, TX

Llano Grande is a Hidalgo County census-designated place near Weslaco, its name meaning "Big Plain" in Spanish. It sits in the Weslaco Independent School District and the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metro, but it is not an incorporated city with its own municipal center. The name is older than the subdivision map: the Llano Grande Land Grant began when Juan José Hinojosa applied for it in 1776, and Spain's King Charles IV granted the land to his family in 1790. That makes the place-name a direct link to the valley's Spanish land-grant history.

Nearby Estero Llano Grande State Park gives the name a physical landmark. Texas Parks and Wildlife assembled the park from former farm parcels in the early 2000s; it opened in 2006 with 230 acres of wetlands, thorn scrub, trails, and Alligator Lake, a dried lake bed reshaped into habitat. Llano Grande Lake, part of the Arroyo Colorado watershed, borders the park on the south. For a place without a separate town government, that is the useful local orientation: Weslaco schools and roads, an old Spanish land grant, and a wetland park carrying the same Big Plain name.
