About Lobo Canyon
Lobo Canyon is a census-designated place in northern Cibola County, about nine miles northeast of Grants along New Mexico State Road 547. The road runs through a valley at the base of La Jara Mesa and continues toward the Cibola National Forest. Lobo Canyon is a landscape label as much as a settlement name: canyon walls, mesa country, forest roads, and the long route back to Grants give it its shape. The surrounding views open toward high desert mesas and the forested slopes of Mount Taylor.
That name has taken on a new local connection through the Lobo Canyon Trail system. Approved in 2022 for the Mount Taylor Ranger District, the planned system covers 23.8 miles, with volunteer crews already clearing and building several miles of trail. Cibola County planning documents place Lobo Canyon among the area's outdoor assets, alongside Mount Taylor and the wider forest. The community remains small and spread across a rural valley, but the road and trail network make its place on the county map easy to follow.
