Lockwood CDP (Monterey County), CA

Lockwood is a Monterey County census-designated place in the lower San Antonio Valley, on the west side of the Salinas River and among the coastal mountains. The 2020 CDP had 368 residents across a broad 10.9 square miles of farms, ranches, vineyards, and grazing land. Families began settling the valley in the 1870s; some came from Milpitas Rancho and Jolon, while others arrived from the Island of Fohr off the German coast. Early landholders bought 160-acre sections and built farms that could stay in the family for generations. A post office opened in 1888 in Lair Patterson’s home and took the name of Belva Ann Lockwood, the Equal Rights Party candidate for president in 1884 and 1888.

Lockwood was never a big town, but it once had the pieces of a full rural service center: a livery stable, general store, saloon, hotel, community hall, and Pleasant View School. The post office and community center remain familiar stops, and Lockwood School District keeps education part of the local map. Today vineyards, olive groves, cattle ranches, Lake San Antonio, and the road toward Jolon and Fort Hunter Liggett shape the daily orbit. Lockwood’s story is the San Antonio Valley in miniature—long distances, working land, family continuity, and a small civic center holding the name together.
