Logan, NM

Logan is a Quay County village of 970 people at the 2020 census, built around a crossing point on the Canadian River. Its origin is pure railroad geography: the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad needed a bridge over the river, and the village took its name from Eugene Logan, a Texas Ranger who came to work on the project. The old Rock Island connection is the reason Logan exists where it does, along the eastern New Mexico route between the plains and the river.

Today the strongest local reference point is Ute Lake, created by Ute Dam west of town in 1963 and 1964 and now part of Ute Lake State Park. The lake brings boating, fishing, camping, and other seasonal activity into the village's orbit, while Logan remains a small residential and service center in Quay County. Its setting combines an old rail-bridge town with a reservoir landscape: the Canadian River supplied the original crossing, and Ute Lake supplies the present-day recreation and gathering place.
