About Logansport

Logansport sits at the Sabine River on the Louisiana–Texas line, where US 84 crosses into Louisiana and the road immediately becomes a riverfront arrival. The town’s name comes from Dr. Logan, who founded the settlement around 1830 and ran the ferry remembered as Logan’s Ferry. The border had been disputed for years; in 1806, General Simón de Herrera helped negotiate the neutral territory that shaped this stretch of the Sabine. Later, steamboats ran between Logansport and Orange, carrying cotton toward larger markets. The bridge makes the town’s boundary role visible before you reach Main Street.

That river crossing still sets the town’s first impression. Dennis Freeman Memorial Riverfront Park has a boardwalk, veterans memorial, walking paths, gazebo, picnic tables, and pavilion, with the bridge visible beside it. Freeman helped establish the local fire and ambulance districts, another reminder that Logansport’s story is built from practical community work. The local scoop is border-town geography made tangible: bridge, river, ferry memory, and a park right where Texas hands the road to Louisiana.
