Lone Pine, CA

Lone Pine is an Inyo County community in the Owens Valley, with the Sierra Nevada rising to the west and the Inyo Mountains to the east. The 2020 census counted 2,014 residents. U.S. 395 runs through the town, while the Alabama Hills and Mount Whitney pull the landscape toward the high country. The name came from a solitary pine that once stood at the mouth of Lone Pine Canyon, a small detail that fits a place framed by much larger landforms.

The local mix is bigger than scenery. The Lone Pine Paiute-Shoshone community has deep ties to the valley, Diaz Lake marks the earthquake history, and the Owens Lake country carries the memory of mining and water transport. Then there is the movie business: the Alabama Hills became a working backdrop for Westerns, and the Museum of Western Film History keeps that connection in town. Lone Pine is where a highway stop, a tribal community, a mountain gateway, and a film location all occupy the same desert-valley map.
