Lookout Mountain, AL

Lookout Mountain is an Etowah County census-designated place spread across 15.24 square miles on the Alabama end of the long ridge above the Gadsden side of the Coosa Valley. The name does double duty: it marks both the community and the mountain, so the local map is a mix of ridge roads and the valley routes below. Etowah County's own map puts Lookout Mountain, Sand Mountain, Noccalula Falls, the Lookout Mountain Parkway, and the Coosa River in the same northeastern Alabama landscape.

Because Lookout Mountain is a CDP rather than an incorporated town, it does not have its own town government or municipal center. Services and road connections tie it to Etowah County and the Gadsden area, whose county-seat role sits below the ridge. Etowah County was established in 1866 as Baine County and took the Etowah name in 1868, so the community belongs to a county with a clear Reconstruction-era origin. The local scoop is a named highland place near the mountain's southern end, with the valley, waterfalls, parkway, and river supplying the practical landmarks.
