Loretto, PA

Loretto grew from a Catholic settlement in the Allegheny foothills into a borough whose map is closely tied to Saint Francis University. Michael McGuire, a Continental Army captain, established the earlier settlement in 1785; Father Demetrius Gallitzin arrived in 1799, gave it the name Loretto, and built the religious community that shaped its later history. The university's 600-acre campus now occupies a large part of the borough's landscape, while Penn Cambria School District serves local public-school students. The campus is Franciscan in character and remains central to local geography.

The town's history is easy to encounter on foot. Captain Michael McGuire Memorial Park, beside the university on Metz Road, pairs picnic areas, fitness paths, a playground, and restrooms with interpretive signs about the settlement's founder and the surrounding environment. Loretto sits about six miles east of Ebensburg, 17 miles west of Altoona, and 25 miles southwest of Johnstown, but its defining local reference remains the university, the borough, and the Catholic history that connects them.
