Los Osos, CA

Los Osos sits between the Morro Bay estuary and protected coastal landscapes that occupy thousands of acres around it. This unincorporated San Luis Obispo County community had 14,465 residents in the 2020 census across 12.8 square miles. Its elected Community Services District, formed in 1998, supplies water and handles drainage, solid waste, parks and recreation, street lighting, and fire and rescue services, while county departments provide other functions. That division matters locally because the park, library, transit, and utilities residents use are managed by several public agencies rather than a single city hall. Public open space reaches Los Osos from several directions. Just south of town, Montaña de Oro State Park encompasses more than 8,000 acres and seven miles of shoreline, with beaches, tide pools, trails, equestrian and mountain-bike routes, a campground, and the Spooner Ranch House visitor center.

Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve protects centuries-old coast live oaks growing on ancient dunes east of town. Along the estuary, the 90-acre El Moro Elfin Forest uses a four-fifths-mile boardwalk to protect habitat while providing views across Morro Bay; the preserve has recorded more than 200 plant species and 110 bird species. In town, Los Osos Community Park combines two playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic and turf areas, a skate park, and the Red Barn and historic schoolhouse rooms. The county library on Palisades Avenue opens Tuesday through Saturday and provides computers, Wi-Fi, Chromebooks, wireless printing, and a seed library. SLO Regional Transit Route 12 loops through Los Osos before continuing to Morro Bay, Cuesta College, and central San Luis Obispo.
