About Louisville

Louisville is Jefferson County’s seat and Georgia’s former capital, a city whose name is pronounced ‘Lewis-ville’ and honors Louis XVI. The General Assembly chose the site in 1786, and the state government met here from 1796 until 1807. Planners set the town near Rocky Comfort Creek and the Ogeechee River, hoping river trade would give the new capital a commercial edge. The old statehouse chapter still frames the city’s history, while U.S. 1 carries the modern road map toward Augusta and Swainsboro. The local shorthand is former capital, Ogeechee, Rocky Comfort Creek, and a Jefferson County seat with a very specific pronunciation.
