Loup City, NE

Loup City is Sherman County’s seat, with 1,053 residents in 2020, and its story is tied to the Middle Loup River valley. The first settlement dates to the mid-1860s, and the town was platted in 1864; its name follows the river. Polish heritage is part of the local calendar and the town’s public face, especially during Polish Days on the first weekend of June. Loup City is also known as Nebraska’s Polish Capital, a reminder that its history is carried through festivals, food, families, and the names people still use for home.

Water has shaped the county as much as farming has. An early irrigation ditch between Arcadia and Loup City appeared in 1895, the Middle Loup Power and Irrigation Company arrived in 1932, and work on Sherman Dam began in 1959. The reservoir now offers a 2,845-acre lake and 4,721 acres of surrounding land for boating, fishing, and outdoor time. In town, Jenners Park has playgrounds and disc golf, while the tan-brick Sherman County Courthouse, dedicated in 1921, gives the county seat a strong civic landmark. Loup City Public Schools and local services fill out the daily town rhythm.
