About Loving

Loving is an Eddy County village on U.S. 285, about 12 miles southeast of Carlsbad and four miles west of the Pecos River. Swiss settlers arrived in the 1890s and first called the settlement Vaud, after a Swiss canton; the village took the name Loving in 1908, honoring cattleman Oliver Loving. That cattle-drive history still hangs over the place, but Loving's present-day map is simpler: one small village, a highway through its west side, and the Pecos country just east.
