Lovingston, VA

Lovingston is Nelson County's seat in the Charlottesville metro, set between Blue Ridge mountains and farmland. The village was platted in 1809 as the county's government center, and its layout still shows two different kinds of traffic: courthouse activity gathered around Courthouse Square, while Front Street followed the old Charlottesville–Lynchburg stage road. U.S. Route 29 bypassed Front Street in 1961, leaving the historic core legible as a separate piece of the county's transportation story.

The 224-acre Lovingston Historic District holds the 1809 town hall and courthouse, an 1823 jail designed by Thomas Jefferson, churches, former tavern-hotels, shops, and a theater. The county seat still supplies civic work, while Front Street and nearby businesses handle everyday commerce. A Wednesday-afternoon farmers market brings produce, baked goods, and crafts into town; the Nelson 29 craft beverage trail connects wineries, breweries, and distilleries; and the Rockfish River offers a nearby water corridor. Nelson Hall, the county's only movie theater, gives the courthouse village a distinctly local screen.
