Lower Kalskag, AK

Lower Kalskag, known locally as "Lower," is a quiet Yup'ik community of under 300 residents along the north bank of the Kuskokwim River. Situated about 26 miles downriver from Aniak in western Alaska, it shares a close bond with neighboring Upper Kalskag just two miles away. The two villages are connected by a short gravel road, making it easy for neighbors to visit, run errands, and share community events throughout the year.

Like many remote Alaskan villages off the main road system, everyday life here revolves around the seasons and the water. Getting in and out means catching a small bush plane at the local airstrip or hopping in a boat during the ice-free summer months. Once winter sets in, the frozen Kuskokwim transforms into an ice highway, allowing residents to travel between nearby villages by truck or snowmachine. It is a peaceful, tight-knit town where subsistence traditions and river living shape daily life.
