Lower Kalskag, AK

Lower Kalskag is a Bethel Census Area city of 278 people at the 2020 census, 26 miles west of Aniak on the north bank of the Kuskokwim River. Locals call it "Lower," and the town's practical map is closely tied to Upper Kalskag, two miles upriver. A single two-mile maintained gravel and dirt road connects the two communities.

Access is the defining practical fact. Lower Kalskag can be reached by small plane or boat, and by vehicles via the river ice road in winter. The connection to Upper Kalskag reflects a shared river landscape, while plane, boat, and seasonal ice carry the community's links outward. Lower Kalskag is a small city whose location is measured less by paved highways than by river distance and winter conditions. The river is both route and setting here, and the two Kalskags remain linked by the same narrow corridor. In winter, the frozen river can carry road traffic where summer travel depends on water or air.
