Lubbock, TX

Long before modern neighborhoods spread across the South Plains, people were drawn to the natural springs at Lubbock Lake Landmark. Today, the 336-acre preserve offers a quiet outdoor escape on the northwest edge of town, where walking trails wind past active archaeological digs and scenic canyon views. It is one of the few sites in North America with an unbroken record of human history dating back nearly 12,000 years. For residents, it makes a great weekend hiking spot to learn about ancient wildlife, watch native birds, and enjoy wide-open West Texas skies.

Lubbock began developing into a regional hub during the early 1900s, driven by the arrival of the railroad and a booming cotton trade. You will still see plenty of cotton fields stretching across the horizon, but the local economy has broadened significantly. Major employers range from agricultural processors and equipment manufacturers to tech and medical device companies. With Interstate 27, major highways, and Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, the city serves as the main shipping and commercial center for communities across the entire region.

Much of the city’s energy comes from Texas Tech University. With more than 40,000 students, the campus brings a steady stream of college athletics, concerts, and guest speakers to town, and game days reliably turn the city scarlet and black. The university also anchors the region's medical sector through the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Together with University Medical Center and Covenant Health, these institutions make Lubbock the primary healthcare destination for West Texas and eastern New Mexico.

The local arts scene gives newcomers an easy way to get connected. As the birthplace of rock legend Buddy Holly, Lubbock honors its rich musical heritage at the Buddy Holly Center in the historic Depot District. On the first Friday of every month, residents gather downtown for the First Friday Art Trail. The popular free event features open art galleries, live bands, local food trucks, and free trolley rides, making it one of the best ways to explore the neighborhood and meet people in the community.
