Lumberport, WV

Lumberport is a town in Harrison County, West Virginia, at the confluence of Tenmile Creek and the West Fork River. The town had 720 residents in 2020. State Route 20 follows the river corridor, connecting Lumberport with Clarksburg, Shinnston, and the smaller communities of northern Harrison County. The town’s position beside two waterways gives the streets a narrow valley shape, with hills rising beyond the river bottom. Harrison County’s power station sits outside town along the West Fork.

Lumberport was established around 1770 and took its name from a boatyard that became a port. The name later fit the lumber industry that employed residents through the early twentieth century, when timber work shaped the local economy. As that industry changed, jobs and population declined after 1950. Today the town’s story is still visible in the water, road, and industrial corridors that meet here. Lumberport is a small West Virginia town with a river junction, a working past, and a name that remembers the timber and boat traffic that once moved through the valley.
