Lyles, TN

Lyles is an unincorporated Hickman County community and census-designated place along Tennessee 100, with a few stores, churches, and Camp Okawehna standing in for the kind of main street a larger town would have. Its first name was Lyell Station. William, John, and Robert Lyell were involved in building the station, and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway gave the settlement a reason to gather around the tracks. The name eventually shortened to Lyles, but the Lyell family thread is still part of the place's identity.

The railroad no longer carries daily service through town, though the tracks remain, so Lyles is now read more through its roads and nearby communities than through a depot timetable. Route 100 ties it to Wrigley and Bon Aqua in the East Hickman area, while old family names survive in roads such as Ed Lyell Road, McGee Road, Tidwell Lane, and Bishop Road. This is rural Middle Tennessee without a neat municipal boundary: homes, churches, businesses, and wooded country spread along a corridor that once revolved around a station. Lyles feels like a place-name with a long memory, still carrying the shape of the railroad that started it.
