Lyman, WA

Lyman is a Skagit County town along the Skagit River, where the river, North Skagit Slough, and valley roads meet. The 2020 census counted 423 residents. Sedro-Woolley lies downstream, while Hamilton and the upper Skagit valley run east; roads connect Lyman with both parts of the river corridor. Lyman is a small river town whose streets still follow the low ground around the slough and the higher ground along the valley edge. The town’s low river setting makes water levels part of the local calendar.

Before American settlement, the Chobaabish band of the Skagit people had winter houses around the present town and across the river near Day Creek. Later settlers raised hops, cut timber, and built a sawmill; the Seattle and Northern Railroad reached Lyman in 1891. Floods repeatedly tested the commercial street, including a major shift of water through the slough in 1889. The old Town Hall began as Birdsey Minkler’s house, and the town’s history remains written in river crossings, mill sites, and roads that follow the Skagit.
