Lyndon, KS

Lyndon is the Osage County seat, a Kansas city founded in 1869 and named for Lyndon, Vermont. The 2020 census counted 1,037 residents. Its courthouse history is a little more dramatic than the population suggests: the Kansas Supreme Court ruled in 1875 that Lyndon was the rightful county seat, but rival towns kept contesting the decision. Lyndon secured the arrangement with a permanent courthouse, completed in 1923, and that Classical Revival building now stands on the National Register.

USD 421 serves local students, while the Carnegie Library and Wells P. Bailey House add two more civic markers around town. Osage County’s landscape is tied to farm roads, the Osage Cuestas, and the former coal industry that shaped the county after coal was found in 1860. Lyndon’s role is administrative as much as commercial: county offices, the courthouse, the school district, and the library connect a small city to the wider rural county. A newcomer gets the picture quickly—a county-seat town with a courthouse at its center and prairie-and-woodland roads leading out in every direction.
