Lyons, OH

Lyons began as Morey’s Corners, a Fulton County crossroads formed when a plank road reached the area in 1850. The name honored Jinks Morey, who helped establish the settlement and founded the First Universalist Church. The post office has used the name Lyons since 1837, giving the village a postal identity that predates the plank-road chapter. That mix of road and mail made the town an early trading point for Royalton Township and the surrounding farm country.

First Universalist Church remains the oldest nonresidential structure in Royalton Township, carrying the village’s nineteenth-century beginnings into the present. Lyons is still a small village with a practical connection to Fulton County’s roads, fields, and nearby towns. The community’s local map is built from modest pieces: a plank-road route, an old church, the post office, homes, and businesses serving people who live outside the village as well as within it. Lyons has the feel of an Ohio place that grew from a road stop into a named community and kept both parts of that story.
