Lytle Creek, CA

At the 2020 census, Lytle Creek was a San Bernardino County census-designated place of 725 people in the San Gabriel Mountains, about sixteen miles northwest of downtown San Bernardino. The community follows a large southeast-trending canyon inside the San Bernardino National Forest, with the creek and the road doing most of the work that a town center would do elsewhere. The name reaches back to Captain Andrew Lytle, a Mormon officer who came west with the Iowa Volunteers in 1847 and returned in 1851 as one of the wagon leaders guiding settlers toward San Bernardino. His group camped by the creek after crossing Cajon Pass, and the water took his name.

Lytle Creek's practical geography points downhill toward Rialto. Elementary students attend Kordyak Elementary, while middle and high school students travel to schools in the Rialto Unified School District. That arrangement says plenty about the canyon: homes sit among forested slopes, but school, shopping, and larger errands belong to the valley. The creek, the forest boundary, the Cajon route, and the San Bernardino connection give Lytle Creek a strong sense of direction. It is a small mountain community whose story begins with a named stream and continues through the daily trip out of the canyon.
