Maalaea, HI

Sitting right where the West Maui Mountains meet the central valley, Māʻalaea is one of the island’s most convenient crossroads. For generations, people have used this coastal stretch as a natural passageway between different parts of Maui. It has deep roots as a traditional fishing community and a historic boat landing, but modern Māʻalaea functions as a quiet, centrally located home base with quick drives to Kahului, Kihei, and the west side.

Life here revolves around the water. The harbor is always buzzing with charter boats heading out for morning snorkel trips and winter whale watching. Most residents live in the strip of oceanfront condos lining the bay, just down the road from the Maui Ocean Center, harbor shops, and the boardwalks at Keālia Pond. Strong trade winds funnel through the valley pretty regularly, but in exchange you get front-row seats to migrating humpbacks right from your lanai and a great vantage point for watching surfers tackle the famous Freight Trains break on big summer swells.
