About Mabel

Mabel is a Fillmore County city in southeastern Minnesota, where the 2020 census counted 716 residents. A post office bearing the name has operated since 1880, and the city was named for the daughter of a railroad official. Minnesota State Highways 43 and 44 pass through town, connecting Mabel with the surrounding farm country and nearby communities. The surrounding hills and valleys put the city in a landscape of farms, limestone, and winding county roads.

Mabel-Canton Public Schools serves the area, linking two older school communities through one district. Before the merger, Mabel School used purple and white as its colors. Mabel's business history includes E. L. Tollefson's mercantile store, a creamery, livestock and grain shipping, an egg and poultry trade, and the Bank of Mabel, later First National Bank of Mabel. The city still carries those layers in its post office, school routes, highway crossings, and compact commercial center. It is a small southeastern Minnesota place with a rail-era name and a practical farm-town history.
