Machesney Park, IL

Machesney Park is a village north of Rockford in Winnebago County. Its name comes from Machesney Airport, which once stood along North Second Street where the Machesney Park Mall later developed. That airport-to-mall story captures the village's practical, modern suburban origins. Today Machesney Park has neighborhoods, big-box retail, river-area access, and close ties to the Rockford metro. It feels more like a postwar and late-20th-century suburb than an old Illinois town, with commercial corridors doing much of the defining work.
