Mackinac Island, MI

Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron between Michigan's peninsulas, famous for its Victorian charm, historic fort, and lively downtown fudge shops. Beyond the summer vacation crowds, it is home to a close-knit year-round community of about 600 people. Most of the island is protected state park land, offering miles of quiet wooded trails, limestone bluffs, and open shoreline right outside your front door.

Day-to-day life is defined by the island's most famous rule: personal motor vehicles are banned. Residents get around by bicycle, walk to the harbor, or listen for horse-drawn drays delivering groceries and packages from the mainland ferry. A single public school serves local students from kindergarten through high school, and once the busy tourist season winds down, the island shifts into a remarkably peaceful, slow-paced small town.
