About Mackinaw
Mackinaw is a Tazewell County village in the Peoria metro, set along the river that gives both the village and Mackinaw Township their name. The 2020 census counted 1,879 residents. The village sits inside the township geographically but governs itself separately, a small bit of map trivia that tells you how old the local boundaries are. The river and the farm country around it give Mackinaw the look of a central Illinois place built for staying put.

Deer Creek-Mackinaw Community Unit School District 701 keeps the two communities linked, with the high school in Mackinaw and other schools spread through the district. Brock Lake and Westwood Park add a little water and green space to the village’s daily map. Mackinaw does not have to lean on a grand landmark to make sense: the river supplies the name, the schools supply the calendar, and the roads tie a village neighborhood to the larger Peoria area. It is a place where township lines, school lines, and the river all overlap without quite matching.
