Madison, ME

Madison is a census-designated place inside the town of Madison in Somerset County, Maine. The 2020 census counted 2,533 residents. The CDP sits within a wider town along the Kennebec River; the town center includes shops and the Madison Public Library on Old Point Avenue, with the river-and-foothills setting defining the area. Madison was incorporated in 1804 as Maine's 150th town, while the CDP is the smaller built-up center used for local errands. Route 201 carries traffic through the wider town toward Skowhegan and the western mountains.

The boundary matters. The larger Madison map opens toward Lake Wesserunsett and the Lakewood area, six miles north of Skowhegan. Lakewood Theater has presented summer shows since 1901 and was designated Maine's State Theater in 1967; its seasonal productions still give the area an arts connection unusual for a small inland community. Madison is a place where a compact center, a working river, and a long-running theater tradition share the same town roads.
