Madison, MO

Madison is a city in Monroe County, Missouri, United States. The 2020 census counted 515 residents. The first settlement at Madison was made in 1836. Abernathy settled in Madison in that year, and named the town after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Madison has a public library, a branch of the Little Dixie Regional Libraries. That mix gives Madison a clear local shape within Missouri, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. Madison is in western Monroe County along U.S. Route 24, which leads east 11 miles to Paris, the county seat, and west 14 miles to Moberly. Missouri Route 151 also passes through the center of Madison, leading north 21 miles to Clarence and south 22 miles to Centralia.
