About Madison

A seven-acre botanic garden on a mid-nineteenth-century estate adds an unusual public landscape to Madison's recreation system. Madison Station Botanic Garden combines native and heritage plants with paths, courtyards, and cultural interpretation. Nearby Simmons Arboretum labels Mississippi plants along wooded paths with bridges and an overlook. The city's everyday parks serve different purposes: seven-acre Strawberry Patch Park has a one-acre lake, lighted one-mile trail, universal playground, meeting hall, and memorial gardens, while nearly 70-acre Liberty Park concentrates ball fields, soccer fields, a paved walking trail, volleyball courts, and a playground. The red caboose at Madison Square Center for the Arts marks another cluster of public activity. The center hosts theater and arts programs, and its grounds support seasonal gatherings. Madison's 2026 calendar scheduled weekly June farmers markets, four May music nights, children's performances, arts camps, a July Fourth program at Strawberry Patch Park, and fall and winter festivals at downtown and park sites.

Madison County Library System's local branch adds story times, book clubs, technology classes, crafts, digital resources, and a bookmobile network. The city grew from 27,747 residents in the 2020 census to an estimated 28,575 in 2025. Nearly two-thirds of adults held at least a bachelor's degree during 2020-2024, median household income was $119,338, and workers' mean travel time was about 24 minutes. In the same period, homeowners occupied 94 percent of homes, and 91 percent of people age one or older had remained in the same home from the previous year. An owner-occupied home had a median value of $352,900; median monthly costs with a mortgage were $2,079, and median gross rent was $1,853.
