Madisonville, LA

Madisonville sits on the Tchefuncte River near its entrance to Lake Pontchartrain and is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The river made the town a working port: before the Civil War, bricks and other products from communities along the Tchefuncte moved through Madisonville toward New Orleans. Its settlement history reaches back to Jean Baptiste Baham, who arrived in 1783 on a Spanish land grant. The town took the name Madisonville in 1811 and incorporated in 1817, and it remains the oldest permanent settlement in St. Tammany Parish.

The river still organizes Madisonville's strongest public traditions. Maritime Museum Louisiana occupies a town waterfront role, and its Wooden Boat Festival will mark 35 years on October 17-18, 2026, with more than 100 classic boats and hundreds of spectator boats on the Tchefuncte. The Tchefuncte River Lighthouse adds a preserved navigation marker to that setting. Madisonville also has a town museum, park and playground, community center, and parishwide public-school system. The result is a small town whose history is easiest to understand from the water: port, mail route, shipbuilding center, museum, and annual boat gathering all meet along the same river.
