Madrid, NM

Madrid is a Santa Fe County census-designated place on New Mexico State Road 14, part of the Turquoise Trail between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Its present-day arts district sits on top of a coal-mining past. Coal Gulch became the town site after a railroad spur reached the area in the 1890s; Madrid then grew into a company town with miners' cabins, a company store, schools, a hospital, and a large employee club. The mines closed in the 1950s, but the old town layout still shapes the main street.

The comeback began in the 1970s, when artists and craftspeople moved into former miners' cabins. Today galleries, studios, shops, cafes, the Mine Shaft Tavern, and the Coal Mine Museum line the highway corridor and keep visitors moving through the old settlement. Madrid falls within Santa Fe Public Schools, with students assigned to Amy Biehl Elementary, Milagro Middle, and Santa Fe High. The local rhythm is a useful mix of mountain road, former company town, and art stop: you can see the mine-era bones in the cabins and museum, then turn onto the same main street for galleries, food, and community events.
