Madrid, NY

Madrid is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Madrid, St. Lawrence County, in northern New York. The 2020 census counted 736 residents. The Grasse River runs through the community, and Brandy Brook crosses the northwestern part of the town. State Route 345 passes through the hamlet and connects with Route 310, while Canton and the St. Lawrence River country lie nearby.

Settlement began around 1801, and Madrid was one of the four original towns created with St. Lawrence County in 1802. The name comes from Madrid, Spain, giving this North Country town a distinctly international label. Madrid-Waddington Central School serves students from the town, with the campus outside the population center. The river also links the hamlet to nearby farms and the wider North Country road network in every season. Today the river, the state routes, and the town’s farm roads hold Madrid together: water and transportation first drew people here, and they still set the pace of the map.
