Magalia, CA

Perched in the pine-covered foothills of Butte County, Magalia offers a quiet mountain setting just up the ridge from Paradise and Chico. Home to around 7,800 residents, the community appeals to newcomers looking for tall trees, cooler ridge weather, and a slower pace of life. The town traces its roots back to the 1849 Gold Rush, starting out as a mining camp called Mountain View before picking up the colorful nickname Dogtown after an early dog breeder settled there in 1850.

The area's Gold Rush heritage is famous for the massive 54-pound gold nugget discovered at the nearby Willard Claim in 1859.
