Maharishi Vedic City, IA

Located just a few miles north of Fairfield in southeast Iowa, Maharishi Vedic City is one of the most unique small towns in the country. Founded in 2001 by followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the entire community was planned from scratch according to ancient Vedic architectural principles. You will notice the distinct look right away. Every single home and building faces due east toward the rising sun, features an open central room, and is topped with a decorative golden roof ornament designed to promote harmony and good health.

The town sits amid thousands of acres of certified organic farmland, and local laws actually ban non-organic food and synthetic pesticides within city limits.
