Maharishi Vedic City, IA

Maharishi Vedic City is a Jefferson County city about four miles north of Fairfield, in the farm country of southeast Iowa. It was incorporated on July 21, 2001, first as Vedic City and then renamed Maharishi Vedic City five months later. The city grew from a vision associated with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and the Fairfield community, with planning and building design based on Maharishi Sthapatya-Veda principles. The result is a municipality whose streets, homes, public buildings, and agricultural surroundings were planned around a specific cultural and architectural system.

The city covers roughly three square miles amid about 2,200 acres of USDA-certified organic farmland. Its local rules prohibit the sale of non-organic food within city limits, and trails, parks, and lakes break up the built areas. The Raj, an Ayurvedic health spa and vegetarian restaurant, and the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention are among the better-known institutions connected to the community. Maharishi University is nearby in Fairfield, tying the city to a larger educational and meditation network. The 2020 census counted 277 residents. Maharishi Vedic City is an Iowa municipality with a very recent founding, a strong design philosophy, and an agricultural landscape that makes the city feel planned from the ground up.
