Mahopac, NY

Mahopac is a hamlet in the town of Carmel, in Putnam County, centered around Lake Mahopac. The area was originally inhabited by the Wappinger people, and later became a summer resort destination, with hotels and horse-drawn coaches bringing visitors from nearby rail connections to the lake. Today Mahopac is mostly residential, with lakefront homes, local schools, shopping, and access to the Taconic State Parkway. It feels like a suburban lake community at the northern edge of the New York commuter region.
