Makawao, HI

Makawao is an Upcountry Maui community known for its paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, heritage. Set inland on the slopes of Haleakala, it serves as a hub for the surrounding ranching, arts, and residential communities of Upcountry. The town has galleries, small shops, local food, and a cooler, greener feel than the coastal resort areas. Makawao feels distinctly Maui but not beach-centered: rural, creative, and tied to ranch land, mountain weather, and long-standing local families.
