Malaga, CA

Malaga is a Fresno County census-designated place about seven kilometres southeast of downtown Fresno, close to the city while keeping a distinct south-county address. The 2020 census counted 884 residents. Its name has been on the local map since the post office opened in 1886 as Tokay and took the Malaga name later that year. The office closed in 1964, reopened in 1965, and that sequence gives the community a small but telling piece of continuity.

School and road connections do most of the present-day organizing. Malaga Elementary operates on South Ward Avenue within Fowler Unified School District, one of the institutions that gives the place its everyday shape. Fresno supplies the larger employment, shopping, medical, and government network, while Fowler provides the district structure used by local families. The result is a place with a rural edge and a strong tie to the city next door: a few streets of homes and community institutions set among the broad south-Fresno landscape, with the old post-office name still carrying the local history.
