Malin, OR

Malin is a Klamath County city near the Oregon–California border, on a spur of Oregon Route 39 southeast of Klamath Falls. The 2020 census counted 731 residents. The city sits at about 4,062 feet on former Tule Lake ground, inside the irrigated Klamath Project, where flat farm fields meet the high desert. Klamath County School District serves Malin, and Klamath Community College's service area reaches the community. Potatoes, farm families, and water management are part of the local working map.

In 1909, the Czechoslovakian Colonization Club sent scouts west to find land for an immigrant farming colony. About 50 families arrived that September, settling ground reclaimed from Tule Lake. They named the community Malin for the Czech town now known as Malín, and a story about finding a large horseradish root helped give the place another signature. Malin incorporated in 1922 and became known for potatoes. A century later, Czech traditions remain visible alongside a Hispanic population, and descendants of the first colonists still farm Klamath Project land.
