Mamaroneck, NY

Mamaroneck's harbor on Long Island Sound is both a geographic focus and a major public space. The village's 3.21 square miles of land held 20,151 residents in 2020. Mamaroneck grew from a farming settlement on both sides of the Mamaroneck River; in the 1890s, the two sides joined as a commercial village that incorporated in 1895. Its boundaries still cross municipal lines, with one part in the Town of Mamaroneck and another in the Town of Rye, where the area is informally called Rye Neck. At the waterfront, 44-acre Harbor Island Park places a public beach, marina, boat launch, fishing dock, ball fields, playgrounds, pavilion, picnic areas, and a marine education center in the same complex.

Just inland on Library Lane, the Emelin Theatre grew from a 1970 gift to the Mamaroneck Free Library and opened in 1972. The renovated 264-seat venue presents music, comedy, dance, family theater, and independent and contemporary film. Its relationship to village life extends beyond its auditorium: the Emelin subsidizes school performances and produces free summer concerts at Harbor Island Park, linking a year-round indoor arts venue directly to the waterfront gathering space.
