Manassas, VA

The country’s only fully owned 300-millimeter semiconductor fabrication plant operates in Manassas, a ten-square-mile independent city that began at a 19th-century rail junction. Micron’s Fab 6 makes memory products for automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, and networking uses. In May 2026, the company began producing an advanced DRAM technology at the Manassas site after a major expansion and modernization. That industrial lineage predates Micron. IBM chose Manassas for a manufacturing facility in 1968 because rail, roads, the municipal airport, and nearby colleges converged there; later technology and aerospace firms continued to use the southern and western business districts. The result is a city whose national name is associated with Civil War history, while advanced manufacturing remains a visible part of present-day working life.

The original town formed after Virginia authorized a railroad connection at Manassas Junction in 1850. The junction’s strategic value drew military action to the area during the First and Second Battles of Manassas, or Bull Run, in 1861 and 1862. The National Park Service preserves the principal battlefield landscapes nearby, while the junction and postwar town became today’s historic downtown. Manassas was chartered in 1873, and the move of the Prince William County seat from Brentsville in 1894 spurred business and residential growth. It became an independent city in 1975, but the Prince William Judicial Center remained inside Manassas and serves the city, the county, and neighboring Manassas Park. That continuing courthouse role brings legal offices, public employees, jurors, and visitors into a jurisdiction that is administratively separate from the surrounding county.

Historic downtown occupies a compact grid around Center Street, the restored Southern Railway depot, and the active tracks. Virginia Railway Express serves Manassas Station at 9451 West Street on its Manassas Line; the similarly named Manassas Park Station is a separate stop in the neighboring city. Route 28 and Route 234 carry larger commercial properties beyond downtown, and residential neighborhoods occupy much of the intervening land. Industrial and technology campuses are concentrated toward Godwin Drive, Wellington Road, and the airport area. Manassas Regional Airport lies southwest of downtown and remains Virginia’s largest general-aviation airport, serving flight schools, law enforcement, military, medical, and private aircraft. Commercial passenger service is planned for spring 2027, but airline agreements and required reviews were still unfinished in July 2026, so scheduled airline flights were not operating.

Downtown supplies the most concentrated civic and cultural gathering area. The Harris Pavilion hosts seasonal programs, and the 2026 Historic Manassas Farmers Market operates there on Thursdays and on Prince William Street on Saturdays. The 2026 First Friday series closes portions of Center, West, Battle, and Main streets for music, activities, and participating shops and restaurants. The city museum system extends local history beyond the battlefield through the Manassas Museum, Liberia house and grounds, Civil War earthworks, the Jennie Dean memorial site, the railroad depot, and the former Hopkins Candy Factory, now an arts center. Those sites cover rail, African American education, military occupation, commerce, and local architecture across the city. On a Saturday in the 2026 market season, the same downtown blocks can hold produce stalls beside Harris Pavilion, museum visitors near the depot, and classes or performances inside the former candy factory.
