About Manchester

Manchester is the Clay County seat, founded beside the Lower Goose Creek Salt Works when the county was created in 1807. The first county court wanted to call the town Greenville for General Green Clay, but another Kentucky Greenville already had the name, so Manchester became the answer. Salt-making shaped the early settlement, and Goose Creek still gives the county-seat town its physical line. The Manchester Historic District and the Clay County Historical Society's salt-works pioneer village keep that first chapter in view. Manchester is eastern Kentucky with courthouse, creek, and salt in the same origin story.
