Manchester, OH

Manchester is an Adams County village on the Ohio River, where U.S. 52 meets Ohio 136. The place began in 1790 as Massie’s Station, a settlement laid out by Nathaniel Massie near three river islands, and took the name Manchester the following year. It was one of the earliest permanent settlements in the Northwest Territory and was enclosed by a stockade during its first years.

The river made Manchester a working stop long before the modern highway map. Steamboats called here, local farm goods moved along the Ohio, and the town became part of the Underground Railroad network because it sat across from Kentucky. Manchester also served as Adams County seat from 1797 to 1803. The old Alfred Holbrook College campus adds another layer, while the river remains the clearest way to place the village. Think of Manchester as a small Ohio River town with a frontier beginning, a complicated freedom-seeking history, and a road-and-water connection between Cincinnati and the southern Ohio valley.
