Manele, HI

Mānele is a tiny census-designated place on the island of Lānaʻi, in Maui County, with seven people in the 2020 census. It occupies the island's resort and harbor side around Manele Bay, one of only two CDPs on Lānaʻi; the other, Lānaʻi City, contains the island's main town. Mānele's name is tied to a coastal landscape of lava, cliffs, and ocean, while the defining institution is Four Seasons Resort Lānaʻi, whose grounds and Manele Golf Course sit above Hulopoʻe Bay.

That makes Mānele a place where the census boundary and the lived map are different scales. Seven residents share a place known primarily for a large visitor complex, golf, shoreline, and marine access, while airport service runs through Lānaʻi City. The resort's cultural advisors and activities connect visitors to the island's Native Hawaiian history, and the CDP itself remains one of Hawaii's least-populated recognized places. Mānele is a coastal resort district on a small island, with a census footprint far smaller than its visitor presence.
