Manhasset, NY

Plandome Road gives Manhasset a concentrated civic and transportation spine. Three Town of North Hempstead hall buildings stand along the road, Mary Jane Davies Green faces the main hall, and the Long Island Rail Road station lies just west of the commercial blocks. The station is on the Port Washington Branch; the 2026 timetable shows service to Penn Station and Grand Central, while the Manhasset Park District manages commuter lots beside the tracks as well as Patriot's Park, Four Acre Park, and Heroes' Plaza. North Shore University Hospital has a campus nearby on Community Drive. Beyond this corridor, the hamlet occupies part of Long Island's North Shore and the southwestern Cow Neck Peninsula on the glacial Harbor Hill Moraine. Matinecock people maintained a village on Manhasset Bay and called the area Sint Sink, meaning “place of small stones.” The 2020 census recorded 8,176 residents.

community activity is distributed between that inland corridor and a separate retail strip on Northern Boulevard. Manhasset Public Library at 30 Onderdonk Avenue runs 2026 summer reading, changing art exhibitions, and programs for children and adults. Its History Center maintains oral histories, historic newspapers, digital collections, and exhibits on topics including Manhasset Bay and the founding era; staff have contributed a local-history article to the Manhasset Press every week since March 2019. Town parks include Manhasset Valley Park, Whitney Pond Park, and Mary Jane Davies Green, while the park district maintains smaller greens and monuments around the station area. Americana Manhasset, opened in 1956 along the Northern Boulevard “Miracle Mile,” creates a second shopping focus away from Plandome Road.
