Manito, IL

Manito is a Mason County village on the northeastern edge of the county, close to the Tazewell County line and about 20 miles southwest of Peoria. The settlement took shape after 1850, when land was laid out for a town; the railroad arrived in 1859 and changed the pace of local trade. An earlier station called Egypt sat nearby, but the village site won the contest once the depot and streets came together. The Illinois River Railroad, later folded into larger railroad systems, made Manito a place where farm country could load, unload, and keep moving.

That railroad past still sits beside a very current small-town map. Manito's village hall, water service, Memorial Park, and Midwest Central schools give the place its everyday institutions, while the surrounding roads lead into Mason County's fields and the Illinois River lowland. The name is a shortened form of Manitou, and the old railroad town still carries that early prairie-grid shape: a compact village, a school identity, and farm roads pointing toward Peoria, Havana, and the river country. Manito feels like a place built when a depot could make a town, then kept its footing after the trains became less central.
