Manitowoc, WI

Manitowoc is a Lake Michigan city at the mouth of the Manitowoc River, with a long shipbuilding and maritime history. Joseph Edwards built the schooner Citizen here in 1847, a modest beginning for an industry that later became central to the city. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum keeps that story visible, while the Rahr-West Art Museum, housed in a 19th-century mansion near downtown, adds a cultural landmark. Manitowoc feels like a working lakefront city with real local depth.
