Manokotak, AK

Set along the banks of the Igushik River, Manokotak is a small Yup'ik village located about 25 miles southwest of Dillingham in the Bristol Bay region. Without any connecting highways, getting in and out means relying on bush flights, river boats, and winter trails. Daily life follows the seasons closely, with residents getting around on four-wheelers in the summer and snowmachines once the freeze sets in. Open tundra and rolling hills surround the community, giving it a peaceful, self-reliant feel.

The Manokotak Nunaniq School teaches kids from preschool through twelfth grade and serves as a major hub for community potlucks, basketball games, and local events. A few miles inland sits Manokotak Heights, which has grown over the years to include newer homes and community spaces. Subsistence activities are central to everyday life, with families spending their time harvesting salmon, hunting, and picking berries across the tundra. It is a tight-knit place where neighbors know one another and life stays deeply rooted in the land.
