Mansfield, AR

Mansfield sits on the Scott-Sebastian county line in west-central Arkansas, south of Fort Smith on U.S. 71 and near the Poteau Mountain range. The city brings together two earlier communities, Coop Prairie and Chocoville. The railroad reached the area in the late 1880s, carrying farm products and coal and helping Mansfield grow into a regional trading point. That county-line position still gives the city a wider reach than its size suggests, with roads leading toward Greenwood, Waldron, Fort Smith, and Oklahoma.

Mansfield School District serves students from early childhood through high school, and its elementary, middle, and high school facilities organize much of the town’s civic calendar. The district’s history includes the former Phyllis Wheatley School in Huntington, which joined Mansfield Public School in 1962 as area schools consolidated. Today Mansfield combines school-centered local life with a landscape of valleys, farms, timber, and the low mountains south of Fort Smith. The city remains a regional service point shaped by railroad beginnings, county lines, and the roads crossing the Arkansas-Oklahoma border country.
